Ability, Practice, Attitude.

“What you habitually think largely determines what you will ultimately become.” – Bruce Lee

When I think about the athlete’s I’ve coached over the years who made it to a major division one power-five program, three factors stand out for every single one of them.

First and foremost, they had athletic talent. A mom or dad or both if they were talented who had some athletic ability. As my mom would say, you can’t get blood from a turnip. Or, like my daughter’s track coach used to tell the kids, “if your mom is slow and your dad is slow, there is nothing I can do to make you fast.”

Second, you must have a work ethic different than the people who don’t play at the highest level. If you are going to be a one-percenter, you can’t work like ninety-nine percent of the people.

The third and final factor that goes into separating those who reach their dream and goal of playing at a major athletic program, in any sport, is a mindset or mental toughness. The athletes that rise to this level has a confidence about them, and it shows up in practice and the big games. They are clear on their dreams and goals. They operate with confidence, they perform absent of fear they have fun, and it shows.
