October 16, 2020 – Character Matters
““We are,” he continued, “witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership.“― General James Mattis
I had a conversation yesterday with a Christian brother and friend about politics and what evangelicals consider when picking their candidate. I was shocked when he said for him; it comes down to who represents capitalism best. WHAT?
As Jesus’ followers aren’t, we called to be like him: fight for the oppressed, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, care for the widows, and protect the children.
I read a prominent Christian’s letter to his followers, where he said we should vote for the person who best represents our ideas, then he went on to list the 2nd amendment being the first idea we should vote to protect. WHAT?
The reason character matters and that of Jesus’ standing out for us believers is for us to be a great democracy. We need to have the heart to see that applying the right to bear arms is played out differently for people of color. (Let a black man legally open and carry and see if he gets treated differently than a white with all things being equal).
As for capitalism, we all love the idea. We choose it over socialism; however, let’s close the wealth gap, which produces inequalities in health care, mortality rate, wages, CEOs of fortune 500 companies, access to good education, etc. Until then, that’s all it is.
