A transformational coach is dedicated to self-understanding and empathy, viewing sports as a virtuous and virtue-giving discipline. They believe young people can grow and flourish in sports in a way that is more liberating and instructive than can be achieved through almost any other activity. Whereas transactional coaches operate on a quid pro quo basis to incentivize one to perform better. Coaches must start with the assumption that the player is playing for him or herself, therefore, they already feel bad when they do not perform to the level they expect for themselves.
