“Encourage and support your kids because children are apt to live up to what you believe of them.” — Lady Bird Johnson
I recently asked one of my pitching clients, a senior, what her plans were for next year, and her answer was meek, “I dat know.” I then asked her if she applied to any schools. She said yes. Six and four were out of state. I then asked if she had a favorite out of the six. Again, her answer was a meek shoulder shrug with a barely audible, “Nah.” With four being out of state, I asked if going out of state was her first choice, and she gave me that look, “please stop asking me.”
Parents, what was clear to me about this exchange with a kid I have known for a couple of years is that this family does not engage in conversations about dreams and goals—zero discussions on the future and what this kid wants out of life. Personal development conversations go a long way in pointing a young person in the direction of what they have been called to do.
Kids if your parents don’t want to do it, then do it yourself!
